Safe-to-Buy founder and CEO had
a run in with what we consider to be one of the "faceless giants" of the
Internet (and business-world in general). He had the misfortune of coming into contact
with a business called eCOMPANIES.com and from that experience he realized that there were
more than one type of con-artist lurking out there.
This experience made him realize that our fellow web-based small business friends were
exposed to even more dangerous "con-artists" than those simple straight forward
lying low-down cheats and thieves that are so easy to spot! We are talking about the
"blind big corporate crooks!"
Here we are talking about the large listed or over capitalized corporation that have
someone extremely crooked or just plain "stupid and dumb" in charge who feels
they can do what they please -- whether they have the plain common horse sense to know
what they are doing or if it is even right or wrong!
Take eCompanies (not to be confused with eCompanies-online) with millions in assets, who
just happened to have plunked down $7.5 million dollars to buy business.com. This business
claims to want to help develop your "ideas & business plans", but beware,
and they state this themselves, "Due
to the large volume of business plans we receive, if you send us a business plan or
business idea, we may not be able to respond to you personally.
Also be advised that any business plans or business ideas you send to eCOMPANIES are not
confidential. eCOMPANIES or its affiliates may be working on the same or similar business,
or may develop such business in the future. Additionally, eCOMPANIES does not sign
Non-Disclosure Agreements during its discussions with potential investments. If you
understand this and would still like to submit an idea or business plan," -- and God help you if you do! Their one "saving
grace" is they said all the above themselves, would you or could you trust a company
with this type of policy?
Well they together with their attorneys, Sidley & Austin, who grossed $27 billion in
1999 "demanded, that Stevens cease and desist" from "using words and
letters like e, companies and ecompanies". They have the name eCOMPANIES.com and they
believe this gives them the "God given" rights to every other word in the
English language, even remotely connected to their Domain Name, such as eCOMPANIES
-online.com and because Stevens owned another 15 similar names they threatened him with
lawsuits involving $100,000 per name!
We are not going to go into detail regarding this incident and embarrass both
eCOMPANIES.com or Sidley & Austin but only warn our fellow internet colleagues to
beware of "faceless, mindless corporation" because some have people in charge who
feel their "big buck buying power" is too much for anyone to resist or they are
just too dumb to understand anything beyond their perception of their own importance!
However, we should thank these two concerns for generating the "spark" that gave
Stevens the idea to form Safe-to-Buy-online!
